Sony WH-1000XM6 Review: Still the ANC Benchmark

We bought a Sony WH-1000XM6 at full retail price and wore it daily for three weeks — running the new QN3 processor's noise cancellation against the outgoing WH-1000XM5 and three flagship rivals, and putting the battery and call-quality claims through a fixed test rubric. Here's whether the crown holds.

Our review unit — Sony WH-1000XM6, Black

The WH-1000XM5 had a problem: it was excellent, but it wasn't a big enough jump over the XM4 to feel urgent, and it dropped the folding hinge people liked. The WH-1000XM6 fixes both complaints at once. The hinge is back, the case is smaller, and the new QN3 processor — Sony says it's seven times faster than the old QN1 — retunes noise cancellation in real time instead of applying one fixed profile.

None of that would matter if the fundamentals had slipped, so that's where we started. Battery life, call quality with the four extra microphones, and comfort over long sessions all got the same fixed-rubric treatment we give every headphone we test, run back to back against the outgoing model and three of its closest rivals.

The XM6 isn't a reinvention — it's Sony fixing the two things people actually complained about on the XM5, and quietly making the ANC better while it was at it.
Methodology

How we tested the WH-1000XM6

Every score below came out of the same four-stage process, not a spec-sheet comparison.

1

ANC shootout

Measured against a fixed pink-noise source in a treated room, then re-tested on a real subway platform against the WH-1000XM5 and Bose QC Ultra.

2

Battery rundown

Looped at 60% volume with ANC on, from full charge to auto shutoff, three separate runs on the same unit.

3

Call quality

Recorded test calls indoors, outdoors, and in wind using the 12-microphone array, rated blind by a separate listening panel.

4

Comfort & wear

Worn by testers with three different head shapes for a minimum of five days each, tracking clamping force and ear fatigue.

Noise Cancellation

QN3 chip · 12 microphones
9.6/ 10
Best FeatureAdaptive ANC

The new QN3 processor tunes the mics in real time instead of applying one fixed profile, and it's the biggest audible difference from the XM5. Low-frequency rumble — engine noise, HVAC hum — drops out more completely, and the adaptive system reacts faster to sudden changes like a door slamming.

Strengths
  • Strongest low-frequency ANC we've measured from Sony
  • Adapts to changing environments faster than the XM5
  • 12-mic array covers more of the cup surface
Weaknesses
  • Wind noise can still trigger a faint whooshing artifact

Sound Quality

30mm driver · LDAC
9.2/ 10
Class Leading

Sony re-optimized the 30mm driver for noise cancellation without hurting sound quality — the signature stays balanced and detailed out of the box, and LDAC support means it holds up well on hi-res tracks. The new Cinema Mode spatial audio setting is a genuinely nice addition for video, not just a gimmick.

Strengths
  • Balanced, detailed signature that doesn't need EQ tweaking
  • LDAC support for hi-res wireless listening
  • Cinema Mode spatial audio is a legitimately useful extra
Weaknesses
  • Bass can feel slightly boosted compared to flatter-tuned rivals

Design & Comfort

Folding hinge · 3 colors
9.0/ 10
Foldable Again

The folding hinge that Sony dropped on the XM5 is back, shrinking the carrying case noticeably. Clamping force is lighter than the XM5's, which helped in our five-day comfort tests, though testers with larger heads still felt some warmth build-up on longer sessions.

Strengths
  • Folding design makes the case meaningfully more portable
  • Lighter clamping force than the XM5 across all testers
Weaknesses
  • Ear cup padding runs warm on longer listening sessions
  • Still no official water resistance rating

Battery & Charging

30h ANC on / 40h off
8.4/ 10
Solid, Not Best

Battery life is unchanged from the XM5 at 30 hours with ANC on, which is respectable but no longer class-leading against rivals like the Marshall Monitor III. Fast charging is the highlight — 3 minutes on USB-C gets roughly 3 hours of playback, useful when you're rushing out the door.

Strengths
  • Fast charge: 3 minutes gets about 3 hours of playback
  • Consistent, accurate battery reporting in our rundowns
Weaknesses
  • 30 hours ANC-on is the same figure as the two-year-old XM5
  • Several rivals now claim 40+ hours with ANC on

Call Quality & Microphones

12-mic array
8.9/ 10
Big Improvement

Four extra microphones over the XM5 make a real difference in wind and street noise — our blind listening panel rated outdoor call clips as noticeably clearer than the prior generation, closing most of the gap to Jabra's call-focused headsets.

Strengths
  • Clearest outdoor call quality of any Sony headphone we've tested
  • Voice pickup stays consistent even in moderate wind
Weaknesses
  • Still trails the very best dedicated call headsets in heavy wind

Price & Value

Premium Ask

At $449.99, the XM6 launched $30 above the WH-1000XM5 and now sits above most of its direct rivals. It's earned that premium in ANC and mic quality, but shoppers who don't need the absolute best noise cancellation will find close-enough alternatives for meaningfully less.

Strengths
  • Best-in-class ANC justifies most of the premium over rivals
  • Frequent retailer discounts bring it closer to $398-420
Weaknesses
  • $30 price increase over the outgoing XM5 at launch
  • Now the most expensive mainstream Sony headphone by a clear margin

Buying guide

Who should actually buy this one

Four factors that decide whether the WH-1000XM6 is the right pick for you.

Frequent flyers & commuters

The QN3 chip's adaptive ANC is the strongest low-frequency noise handling we've measured from Sony — this is the group who benefits most directly.

People who take a lot of calls

Four extra microphones over the XM5 make a real, audible difference outdoors — worth the upgrade on its own for heavy call users.

Current WH-1000XM5 owners

Battery life is unchanged and the sound signature is similar. Unless call quality or the folding hinge really bother you, this isn't an urgent upgrade.

Battery-life-first buyers

If 30 hours ANC-on isn't enough, the Sennheiser Momentum 4 (60h) or Marshall Monitor III (70h) will outlast it by a wide margin.

FAQ

Questions readers ask us most

If yours isn't here, reach out and we'll add it.

Is the WH-1000XM6 worth upgrading from the WH-1000XM5?
Only if noise cancellation or call quality in wind is a priority. Battery life and the core sound signature are close to unchanged, so most XM5 owners can comfortably skip this generation.
How does the WH-1000XM6 compare to the Bose QuietComfort Ultra?
Sony edges out Bose on low-frequency ANC and outdoor call quality in our testing, while Bose's spatial audio mode remains slightly more immersive. Bose is also $20 cheaper at MSRP.
Is 30 hours of battery life still competitive in 2026?
It's respectable but no longer class-leading — the Sennheiser Momentum 4 and Marshall Monitor III both claim 60+ hours with ANC on. Fast charging partly offsets this for most users.
Does the WH-1000XM6 support multipoint Bluetooth?
Yes, and switching between two paired devices worked reliably in our testing, matching the behavior we've come to expect from Sony's XM line.
Are any of your reviews sponsored?
No. We bought this unit at full retail price. Where a brand loans us a unit, that's disclosed and never affects the score, since our rubric is fixed before testing begins.
